UPPER ST CROIX LAKE ASSOCIATION: AIS Education, Prevention & Monitoring on Upper St. Croix Lk & Headwaters of St. Croix River

Purpose

The Upper St. Croix Lake Association is sponsoring an AIS prevention and education project including a Clean Boat/Clean Water inspection program at three public boat landings, lake resident education, education workshop, newsletter & brochure distribution, and periodic monitoring for invasive aquatic plants around Upper St. Croix Lake. Deliverables include: 1) A summary of accomplishments/progress of the project including watercraft inspection and lake monitoring report detailing total time and number of people reached; 2) CB/CW survey results; daily results must be entered into the DNR CB/CW database; 3) Verification of lake-resident/public education, workshops, and/or inspector training such as agendas and attendance lists; 4) Outreach report including copies of news releases, brochures, educational materials, and mailings. 5) Report on aquatic plant monitoring results including boat and shoreline observations of any detected aquatic invasive species with appropriate maps; 6) Report on Purple Loosestrife control program; 7) AIS related materials generated or paid for by this grant. Special conditions for this project: The project sponsor shall immediately contact the DNR in the event of a new aquatic invasive species infestation. This scope summarizes the project detail provided in the application and does not negate tasks/deliverables described therein. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the AIS Coordinator. It is recommended that Grantee provide AIS Coordinator with a draft final report. The DNR shall receive a paper and electronic copy of the final report. If consultant is to provide final report, it is recommended that Grantee provide AIS Coordinator with a draft for comment on report adequacy prior to making final payment to the consultant.

Boat landing inspections began with the fishing opener on Saturday, May 7th and extended through Labor Day weekend for a total of 18 weekends. During that period two landing sites were monitored each weekend for a total of 51 hours per weekend. While informing boaters about the threat posed by the introduction of Eurasian Water Milfoil and other aquatic invasive species into our lake, the monitors demonstrated proper inspection procedures boaters can employ on their own to ensure their boats and trailers don’t transport invasive species to other lakes.
