Pemebonwon Middle Menominee (GB15) Watershed Planning

Purpose

Watershed plan update 2011. The Pemebonwon and Middle Menominee Rivers Watershed is situated in northeastern Marinette and southeastern Florence counties and includes 53 miles of the Menominee River. Also found in this watershed are the Pemebonwon and North Branch Pemebonwon rivers. Soils in the watershed are principally derived from weathering glacial deposits and consist primarily of well-drained sands. Aurora Sanitary District, the Village of Niagara, Niagara of Wisconsin Paper Company, the Pembine Laundromat and ISP Minerals are point source dischargers in the watershed. Champion International Paper Company in Michigan also discharges to the Menominee River. This watershed provides ample opportunities for recreation and an abundant and diverse fishery exists. White water rafting is popular on the Menominee River in the Piers Gorge area between Niagara, Wisconsin and Norway, Michigan, with sightseeing popular at Horserace Rapids, Piers Gorge, Long Slide Falls, and Smalley Falls.

Study Design

Watershed specified for planning and assessment purposes. Assessment of water quality condition in this respective county will use protocols described in WisCALM of the year of assessment. Minimum assessment work includes biological data (macroinvertebrates, fish indices), chemistry and habitat data. Additional work includes identification of priorities and goals, creating recommendations for actions, and updating narratives for watersheds and waterbodies. Assessments are to be double checked by at least one additional biologist.
