HORSESHOE LAKE PROPERTY ASSOC: Horseshoe Lake Rapid Response for EWM

Purpose

The Horseshoe Lake Property Association is sponsoring a four (4) year Early Detection and Response project that will monitor and manage a pioneering population of Eurasian watermilfoil in Horseshoe Lake. Project activities include: 1) Point-intercept survey(s) and seasonal and/or pre- and post-treatment aquatic plant monitoring following guidelines provided by the Department; 2) Chemical treatment and/or SCUBA and manual removal of Eurasian watermilfoil; 3) Information and Education Program. Special condition: WDNR\2019s Aquatic Plant Management in Wisconsin guidance shall be followed for point-intercept survey monitoring, pre/post treatment monitoring, and aquatic plant management plan development unless otherwise approved by the Department. Specific deliverables for this project include annual progress and final reports of monitoring and management activities, including aquatic plant survey spreadsheets and pre/post treatment monitoring, and any educational materials developed. This scope summarizes the project detail provided in the application and does not negate tasks/deliverables described therein. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps, and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the regional Lake Coordinator.

Reports and Documents
In May 2011, Eurasian water milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) was discovered in the lake. Because of this, the Horseshoe Lake Property Owners Association and the WDNR commissioned a June EWM bed mapping survey, an August full point intercept macrophyte survey, and an October post herbicide swimover assessment survey in preparation for developing an Aquatic Plant Management Plan for the lake. The June survey identified three EWM beds on the east side of the lake totaling 0.53 acre. The August survey found macrophytes at 254 of the 387 total survey points.
