WHITEWATER-RICE LAKE MANAGEMENT DISTRICT: Planning & APM Update

Purpose

The Whitewater-Rice Lakes Management District will hire a contractor to conduct a plant survey and update the aquatic plant management plan for Whitewater-Rice Lakes. The plant survey will include a point intercept survey totaling 362 points for Rice Lake and 625 points for Whitewater Lake. The lake will be sampled in mid-summer. The final report will contain the following elements: 1) Results of the points sampled, including sediment type found and maximum rooting depth; 2) Results of a general lake survey to map general plant beds, map localized plant beds, map species distribution and a list of plant species found; 3) Individual maps of species distribution for the top 5 native species found as well as Eurasian water milfoil and Curly Leaf Pondweed; 4) Results of the watershed inventory; 5) Development of an aquatic plant management plan that meets the requirements of NR 109.09 and the specifications of NR 198.43; 6) Results of the recreational use survey and 7) Minutes from one public meeting regarding aquatic plant issues. The planning program will also include a recreational watercraft census. Two paper copies and one electronic copy of the final plan will be provided to the department. This plan complements other existing plans,1 programs, and ongoing management actions in the Whitewater and Rice Lake watersheds, and it represents the continuing commitments of government agencies, municipalities, and citizens to diligent lake planning and natural resource protection. Additionally, this plans was specifi cally designed to assist State agencies, local units of government, nongovernmental organizations, businesses, and citizens develop strategies that benefi t the natural assets of Whitewater and Rice Lakes. By using the strategies outlined in this plan, the natural environment of the Lakes and their watershed will be preserved and enriched.
