Overview
Happy Hollow Creek is a small spring-fed stream tributary to Willow Creek. The stream is a
Class I trout stream and an exceptional resource water (ERW). Baseline monitoring on the
creek was conducted in 2000. In general, the stream has good water quality. Surveys have
found some natural reproduction of brown trout. The majority of the steam's watershed has
been cleared for agriculture and streambank pasturing and barnyards along the creek also
potentially contribute nonpoint source pollution to the creek. As a result of its good water
quality and the potential for nonpoint source pollution, the stream has been ranked as a high
priority for nonpoint source pollution reduction.

Historical Description
Happy Hollow Creek is a small spring-fed stream tributary to Willow Creek north of the
community of Loyd. The stream is classified as a Class II trout stream (WDNR, 1980)
and has been nominated for exceptional resource water (ERW) status under the state's
antidegradation rules. In general, the stream has good water quality (Eagan, 1985).
Bank erosion has occurred in some places as a result of streambank grazing (Eagan,
1985,WDNR, 1991). There are also at least two barnyards along the creek which are
probably affecting water quality and habitat (Kerr, WDNR, 1991) The stream is
believed to have Class I trout potential if it were properly managed and nonpoint sources
were controlled(Eagan, 1985). Happy Hollow Creek sub-watershed was estimated to
have a medium to high potential for nonpoint source water pollution problems, based on
a 1985 assessment (Eagan, 1985).

Condition
Wisconsin has over 84,000 miles of streams, 15,000 lakes and milllions of acres of wetlands. Assessing the condition of this vast amount of water is challenging. The state's water monitoring program uses a media-based, cross-program approach to analyze water condition. An updated monitoring strategy (2015-2020) is now available. Management Goals
Wisconsin's Water Quality Standards provide qualitative and quantitative goals for waters that are protective of Fishable, Swimmable conditions [Learn more]. Waters that do not meet water quality standards are considered impaired and restoration actions are planned and carried out until the water is once again fishable and swimmable
Management goals can include creation or implementation of a Total Maximum Daily Load analysis, a Nine Key Element Plan, or other restoration work, education and outreach and more. If specific recommendations exist for this water, they will be displayed below online.
Monitoring
Monitoring the condition of a river, stream, or lake includes gathering physical, chemical, biological, and habitat data. Comprehensive studies often gather all these parameters in great detail, while lighter assessment events will involve sampling physical, chemical and biological data such as macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish communities integrate watershed or catchment condition, providing great insight into overall ecosystem health. Chemical and habitat parameters tell researchers more about human induced problems including contaminated runoff, point source dischargers, or habitat issues that foster or limit the potential of aquatic communities to thrive in a given area. Happy Hollow Creek is located in the Willow Creek watershed which is 153.08 miĀ². Land use in the watershed is primarily forest (52.10%), grassland (22.50%) and a mix of agricultural (16.80%) and other uses (8.60%). This watershed has 339.41 stream miles, 64.58 lake acres and 3,605.43 wetland acres.

This watershed is ranked High for runoff impacts on streams, Low for runoff impacts on lakes and High for runoff impacts on groundwater and therefore has an overall rank of High. This value can be used in ranking the watershed or individual waterbodies for grant funding under state and county programs.However, all waters are affected by diffuse pollutant sources regardless of initial water quality.
