Overview
Red Lake, Lower (Weed Dam Pond), in the Red River Watershed, is a 193.54 acre lake that falls in Shawano County. This lake is managed for fishing and swimming and is currently not considered impaired.

Source: 1968, Surface Water Resources of Shawano County Weed Dam Pond, T27N, R14E, Section 2 Surface Acres = 207.2, S.D.F. = 2.78, Maximum Depth = 25 feet.
A hard water impoundment on the Red River having slightly alkaline, light brown water of low to moderate transparency. Most of the shoreline is upland (95 percent) with limited areas of wetland adjoining the basin. No evaluation was made of littoral materials, but sand is probably the predominant littoral material with muck and probably some areas of gravel and rock. At the time of field inspection the flowage area was in the process of being completed, thus limiting field observations to that of the proposed flowage area. The data provided on the physical features should be re-evaluated upon the filling of the basin. Regarding the fishery resource, it can be expected that the fish species that will inhabit this impoundment will be similar to those found in the Gresham Pond. Thus, northern pike, largemouth bass, perch, smallmouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, pumpkinseed, and black bullhead will probably inhabit this impoundment. Provided conditions are suitable, brown trout may also inhabit this area particularly during the cold months of the year. Impoundment will probably be utilized by puddle ducks and diving ducks on their spring and fall migrations. Public access without nearby parking and that of the navigable water type will be available. Presently there are no developments located on the immediate shoreline. Water levels will be maintained by a watercontrol structure that is reported to have a head of approximately 25 feet and is owned by the Village of Gresham.

Monitoring
Monitoring the condition of a river, stream, or lake includes gathering physical, chemical, biological, and habitat data. Comprehensive studies often gather all these parameters in great detail, while lighter assessment events will involve sampling physical, chemical and biological data such as macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish communities integrate watershed or catchment condition, providing great insight into overall ecosystem health. Chemical and habitat parameters tell researchers more about human induced problems including contaminated runoff, point source dischargers, or habitat issues that foster or limit the potential of aquatic communities to thrive in a given area. Lower Red Lake is located in the Red River watershed which is 207.12 mi². Land use in the watershed is primarily forest (54.20%), wetland (20.40%) and a mix of agricultural (15%) and other uses (10.30%). This watershed has 206.51 stream miles, 785.38 lake acres and 24,271.01 wetland acres.

This watershed is ranked Low for runoff impacts on streams, Not Ranked for runoff impacts on lakes and Medium for runoff impacts on groundwater and therefore has an overall rank of Medium.
