Overview
Pickerel Lake, in the Noisy and Pine Creeks Watershed, is a 48.97 acre lake that falls in Lincoln County. This lake is managed for fishing and swimming and is currently not considered impaired.

Historical Description
Source: 1982, Surface Water Resources of Lincoln County Pickerel Lake, T34N, R8E, Sec. 16 Surface Acres = 46.3, Maximum Depth = 15 feet, Secchi Disc = 8 feet.
A soft water drained lake having slightly acid, clear water of moderate transparency. The shoreline is 98 percent mixed upland hardwoods and conifers, and 2 percent shrub wetland. The littoral zone is 50 percent sand, 45 percent muck, 4 percent gravel and 1 percent rubble. Submergent vegetation is moderately dense in some areas of the lake. The outlet flows to Roothouse Lake. The known fish species include northern pike, perch, largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, pumpkinseed, black bullhead and golden shiner. The habitat suggests use by spring and fall migratory waterfowl. Unimproved or difficult public access is possible from a Lincoln County road. There are 56 dwellings on the shoreline.

General Condition
Pickerel Lake (1558400) was assessed during the 2016 listing cycle; total phosphorus and chlorophyll sample data were clearly below 2016 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and Fish and Aquatic Life use. This water is meeting these designated uses and is not considered impaired.

Wisconsin has over 84,000 miles of streams, 15,000 lakes and milllions of acres of wetlands. Assessing the condition of this vast amount of water is challenging. The state's water monitoring program uses a media-based, cross-program approach to analyze water condition. An updated monitoring strategy (2015-2020) is now available. Wisconsin's Water Quality Standards provide qualitative and quantitative goals for waters that are protective of Fishable, Swimmable conditions [Learn more]. Waters that do not meet water quality standards are considered impaired and restoration actions are planned and carried out until the water is once again fishable and swimmable
Management goals can include creation or implementation of a Total Maximum Daily Load analysis, a Nine Key Element Plan, or other restoration work, education and outreach and more. If specific recommendations exist for this water, they will be displayed below online.
Monitoring
Monitoring the condition of a river, stream, or lake includes gathering physical, chemical, biological, and habitat data. Comprehensive studies often gather all these parameters in great detail, while lighter assessment events will involve sampling physical, chemical and biological data such as macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish communities integrate watershed or catchment condition, providing great insight into overall ecosystem health. Chemical and habitat parameters tell researchers more about human induced problems including contaminated runoff, point source dischargers, or habitat issues that foster or limit the potential of aquatic communities to thrive in a given area. Pickerel Lake is located in the Noisy and Pine Creeks watershed which is 179.35 mi². Land use in the watershed is primarily forest (59.60%), wetland (28.70%) and a mix of grassland (3.60%) and other uses (8.10%). This watershed has 175.54 stream miles, 2,718.23 lake acres and 25,929.55 wetland acres.

This watershed is ranked High for runoff impacts on streams, High for runoff impacts on lakes and Low for runoff impacts on groundwater and therefore has an overall rank of Low.
