Overview
Moose Lake is a soft water drainage lake having slightly alkaline, dark brown water of low transparency. There are two inlet streams which afford little or no boating use. The outlet stream is tributary to Little Moose Lake and is part of the Flambeau Flowage drainage. That part of the outlet stream between Moose Lake and Little Moose Lake is navigable but is dependent on water levels. Sand is the predominant littoral material (50 percent) with muck (40 percent), gravel (5 percent), rubble (4 percent), and boulders. The shoreline is predominantly wetland (70 percent) of the coniferous-shrub type with meadow, bog and swamp hardwoods, with the balance being upland. Muskellunge, northern pike, largemouth bass, perch, bluegill, rock bass, and white sucker inhabit this lake. Loon, lesser scaup, mallard, blue- winged teal, and hooded merganser are known to utilize this lake. At the time of survey, nesting bald eagles were observed. Submergent vegetation is sparse throughout half the lake basin while floating is moderate and emergent is dense in scattered areas. There is one resort located on the shoreline. Public access of the navigable water type is available by navigating from the boat landing located on the outlet stream. A temperature profile on August 7, 1964 revealed the lake to be homothermous at 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

Condition
Wisconsin has over 84,000 miles of streams, 15,000 lakes and milllions of acres of wetlands. Assessing the condition of this vast amount of water is challenging. The state's water monitoring program uses a media-based, cross-program approach to analyze water condition. An updated monitoring strategy (2015-2020) is now available. Management Goals
Wisconsin's Water Quality Standards provide qualitative and quantitative goals for waters that are protective of Fishable, Swimmable conditions [Learn more]. Waters that do not meet water quality standards are considered impaired and restoration actions are planned and carried out until the water is once again fishable and swimmable
Management goals can include creation or implementation of a Total Maximum Daily Load analysis, a Nine Key Element Plan, or other restoration work, education and outreach and more. If specific recommendations exist for this water, they will be displayed below online.
Monitoring
Monitoring the condition of a river, stream, or lake includes gathering physical, chemical, biological, and habitat data. Comprehensive studies often gather all these parameters in great detail, while lighter assessment events will involve sampling physical, chemical and biological data such as macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish communities integrate watershed or catchment condition, providing great insight into overall ecosystem health. Chemical and habitat parameters tell researchers more about human induced problems including contaminated runoff, point source dischargers, or habitat issues that foster or limit the potential of aquatic communities to thrive in a given area. Moose Lake is located in the Flambeau Flowage watershed which is 247.18 miĀ². Land use in the watershed is primarily forest (56.80%), wetland (28.20%) and a mix of open (14.10%) and other uses (0.90%). This watershed has 190.98 stream miles, 10,199.06 lake acres and 43,978.35 wetland acres.

This watershed is ranked Not Ranked for runoff impacts on streams, Not Ranked for runoff impacts on lakes and Low for runoff impacts on groundwater and therefore has an overall rank of Low.
