Marathon County Conservation, Planning, and Zoning Department (CPZ) is pleased to announce that on April 1st the DNR awarded Marathon County $100,000 through a Lake Protection Grant! This grant will further the efforts of the Eastern Lakes Program and will help continue and enhance the lakes program. CPZ is very excited about continuing lake protection efforts and working with people interested in protecting and preserving the Eastern Lakes.
Fall is in full force and the Eastern Lakes Project is entering a new phase: Lake Plan Implementation. Now that the Lake Management Plans are complete, Marathon County Conservation, Planning and Zoning (CPZ) can look at each individual lake and prioritize the goals and actions for implementation. Marathon County CPZ is currently engaging local lake stewards and gathering data so that assistance can be provided as needed. Community engagement will be a crucial element during the implementation phase of the Eastern Lakes Project.
Over the past few months Marathon County Conservation, Planning and Zoning (CPZ) staff has been hosting lake discussions for our eastern lakes residents. During these discussions the attendees and CPZ staff conversed about the future of the Eastern Marathon Lakes Program and the how to implement the goals within the Lake Management Plans.
Lake Management Plan for Lilly Lake created in 2015 by the Center for Watershed Science and Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. This lake management plan (LMP) and its planning process allow the community to guide the fate of its lake. The LMP is a dynamic document that identifies the steps needed to maintain, protect and/or create desired conditions in the lake ecosystem into the future. These steps can correct past problems, improve on current conditions, and provide guidance for future boards, lake users, and technical experts by identifying which issues have been addressed and a way to measure success.

The third newsletter about the Marathon County Eastern Lakes classification project. This is the final year of the lake classification study. Last fall, we rolled out social and scientific results of some of the parameters being studied. If you missed those meetings, that information can be viewed on the Marathon County website. The final reports for all lakes in the study will be complete by December 31 of this year.

The second newsletter about the Marathon County Eastern Lakes classification project.
The Eastern Lakes Project will assess eastern Marathon County lakes to plan for lake management and protection. The purpose of the project is to preserve the uniqueness of the area, support recreational activities, protect water quality, and balance development. The project is a partnership of citizens, eastern Marathon County communities, Marathon County government, and the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.
