LITTLE ST GERMAIN LAKE P & R DISTRICT: RES-Restoring Shoreline Habitat on Lt. Saint Germain Lake
Little St. Germain Lake P&R District is sponsoring a project focused on restoring 500 meters of shoreline on Lt. St. Germain Lake. Partners include the USGS, VCLA, Vilas Co. LWCD, UW Ext., WDATCP, MI Tech Univ., & WDNR.
Activities include: 1) native vegetation restoration of 500 meters of shoreline & > 4000 sq. meters of lakeshore buffer; 2) terrestrial & aquatic invasives survey & treatment/removal on restored area; 3) evaluate ecological benefits of buffer restoration for wildlife & fish pops.; 4) assess feasibility of using project to conduct experiments to quantify benifits of buffer re-establishment to reduce nutrient runoff; 5) conduct experiments to develop BMP's for shoreland restoration in the Upper Wisc. River Watershed & Northern Highlands Ecological Landscape; 6) removal, replacement of retaining walls, impervious surfaces within buffer; installation of BMPs for runoff control; 7) repair shoreland erosion w/ biologically degradable materials; 8) tree drops & aquatic macrophyte bed establishment; 9) demo. & education activities including lake ecology workshops, meetings, pamphlets & newsletters; 10) implement pollinator response surveys; 11) final report summarizing project activities including restortaion before & after photos.
