Impaired Water - Puckaway Lake (Puckaway Lake)
Green Lake, Marquette County, Wisconsin
UF06, UF10
158700
5,013.56
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
Puckaway Lake was put on the Impaired Waters List in the 2010 cycle for phosphorus and sediment causing degraded habitat and algal blooms.

Evaluations every two-year cycle from 2012 to 2024 confirmed the elevated phosphorus and algal levels. This water is covered by the Upper Fox & Wolf River Basins TMDL, approved by the US EPA on February 27, 2020.

Impaired Water Notes
Recommend for listing; both TSI-chlorophyll and total phosphorus exceed listing thresholds, and habitat and nonpoint source problems are excessive. The P levels in both basins (E&W) greatly exceed thresholds. The average TP concentration from data in SWIMS (2004-2007, stations 243039 and 243056) is 0.14 mg/l, which exceeds the listing threshold of greater than or equal to 0.04 mg/l for shallow lowland lakes. Example concentrations from 2009 in mg/l: 0.204/0.169/0.253/.0.206 levels from USGS monitoring in 2007 : 0.104/ 0.119/0.121/0.143. Chlorophyll a levels are correspondingly high and turbidity excessive as evidenced via Secchi readings. Average TSI based on chlorophyll is 71, which exceeds the listing threshold of greater than or equal to 71 for Shallow Lowland lakes. Water level fluctuation is eroding the aquatic plant community, resulting in sediment resuspension, and algae development. Water level fluctuation at Puckaway supports high water conditions during the growing season, essentially suffocating plant life. Turbid water conditions (from algae and sediment) represent the algae dominated alternate stable state frequently seen in eutrophic and hypereutrophic shallow lakes.
