Impaired Water - Big Lake (Big Lake (Three Lakes Chain))
Oneida County, Wisconsin
UW44
1613000
844.78
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
Big Lake has a special fish consumption advisory for mercury in fish tissue; this lake was listed in the 1998 cycle.

Big Lake was evaluated for phosphorus and algae every two years between 2014 and 2024. Phosphorus levels were initially though to be too high and the lake was listed in the 2014 cycle; further evaluation of the lake resulted in an update of the natural community type and phosphorus criteria. Based on the newly updated lake community type (Two-Story to Shallow Lowland) the lake is clearly below criteria. In the 2022 cycle phosphorus was proposed for removal from the Impaired Waters List.

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2018 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data overwhelmingly exceeded 2018 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and Fish and Aquatic Life use and chlorophyll data only exceeded FAL thresholds.

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2014 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data overwhelmingly exceed 2014 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and Fish and Aquatic Life use, however, chlorophyll data do not exceed REC or FAL thresholds.

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2016 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data overwhelmingly exceed 2016 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and Fish and Aquatic Life use and chlorophyll data did not exceed REC and FAL thresholds.
Date

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2020 listing cycle; new total phosphorus sample data overwhelmingly exceeded 2020 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and Aquatic Life use. Based on the most updated information, no change in existing impaired waters listing is needed.
Date

Impaired Water Notes
Evaluation of the natural community type resulted in a change from Two-Story Fishery Lake to a Shallow Lowland Drainage Lake. The phosphorus criteria changed from 15 ug/L to 40 ug/L. New total phosphorus sample data were below 2022 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and Aquatic Life use.
