Impaired Water - Marinuka Lake (Marinuka Lake)
Trempealeau County, Wisconsin
BR02
1678200
116.56
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
Marinuka Lake was listed for mercury in fish tissue in 1998 and is proposed for removal based on 2001 updated Fish Consumption advisories.

This lake was assessed for phosphorus and algae in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016; impairments for phosphorus and eutrophication were identified in 2010 and have been confirmed in subsequent years.

Impaired Water Notes
Marinuka Lake is a shallow impoundment on the lower end of Beaver Creek about 10 miles above the confluence with the Black River. Marinuka Lake has marginally fair water clarity with an summer average Secchi Disk of about 2.0 feet and significant algae blooms during low flow conditions. For example, the August 2009 chlorophyll concentration was 275 ug/l. Average summer TSI based on chlorophyll-a is 72.33, which exceeds the impairment threshold of 71 for Shallow Lowland lakes prescribed in the WisCalm (2010). The largely rural watershed contributes excessive phosphorus concentrations. Average total phosphorus concentration (2006, 2008) is .15 mg/l, which is almost four times the listing threshold for shallow lowland lakes of .04 mg/l. Poor water clarity and excessive algae blooms have been associated with runoff events greater than 1 inch per day and not wind generated sediment resuspension (James 2006).

The majority of the poor water quality conditions are attributed to runoff from the watershed that is dominated by rural land uses. James (2006) documented decreases in water clarity and increases algae concentrations, as measured by chlorophyll-a are correlated with runoff from the watershed during periods of rain events greater than 1 inch per day.

Impaired Water Notes
TP and/or chlorophyll data from the period 2006-2010 were insufficient to assess per 2012 WisCALM. However, the previous assessment(s) were carried forward, and the lake remains listed as impaired.

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2016 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data exceed 2016 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and Fish and Aquatic Life use.

TMDL ID = 266 for Hg. P and eutrophication were recommended to be added in 2008 but only one year of data were used (2006). Need three years of data.

Impaired Water Notes
This listing was part of a set removed from the impaired waters list due to a change in fish consumption advisory levels in 2001. In 2001 Wisconsin DNR put into effect a statewide fish consumption advisory for mercury due to atmospheric deposition. Most of the lakes removed from the specific fish consumption advisories list in 2001 were not removed from the impaired waters list even though the thresholds had changed. For the 2020 assessment process WDNR requested delisting of 91 waters with residual mercury listings from prior to 2001. This request was approved by US EPA.
