ONEIDA COUNTY: Oneida County Lakes Management

Purpose

Oneida County Land Conservation Dept. will sponsor a project to develop a partnership with Lake Associations and Lake Districts to solicit volunteers for Self Help Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program and monitor aquatic invasives on boat landings in Oneida County. Education is a key; they will work with DNR to sponsor workshop training for staff and volunteers on lake monitoring and the Clean Boats and Clean Water program. An inventory database of Oneida County Lakes will be developed and updated. Prevention and early detection will be promoted in news releases and a report of products created for this grant. Products: 1. Solicit (20-25 or more) volunteers for Self-Help Volunteer Lake Monitoring and monitoring boat landings in Oneida County. 2. Develop and update an inventory database for Oneida County Lakes (to include: Lake Names, Max. Water Depth, area in acres, Self Help Volunteer lakes, their level of activity (Secchi etc.), Lake Organization, access information and exotics) 3. Conduct spot checks at public boat landings in the County for aquatic invasive species (at least 10 County accesses including swimming beaches and boat landings). 4. Conduct county staff and public workshops in cooperation with DNR (at least 2 workshops). 5. Work with DNR and the media to publicize the results of this project (at least 2 news releases). A summary of accomplishments will be provided to the Department upon completion of the project. The summary will be provided in both paper and electronic format.
