Rocky Run Creek East Fork TWA

Purpose

The Rocky Run Creek East Fork of the Chippewa River and Muskellunge Creek east Fork of the Chippewa River HUC12 watersheds are listed as healthy but vulnerable watersheds. There is limited biological, physical, and chemical data available in these watersheds. This project involved collecting baseline data in these watersheds. Two HUC12 watersheds were selected because the area appears to have limited access and site selection may be limited.

Objective

The project objective was to collect baseline water quality data in two HUC12 watersheds. The work includes monitoring waters for the purposes of updating waterbody assessment status (i.e. future monitoring for 303(d) or ERW/ORW status), for making management recommendation, updating water and watershed narratives in WATERS and for watershed planning. The Monitoring stations to be determined after field reconnaissance.

Outcome

Possible future monitoring for 303(d) or ERW/ORW status, use of information for making management recommendations, updating waterbody and watershed narratives in WATERS and use in watershed planning. See Study Design for more detailed project description. Sampling was completed by November 30, 2015. Data entered into SWIMS or FHDB by 12/31/2015. Final Report by 5/1/2016.

Study Design

The study design involved conducting fish, qualitative habitat surveys and collect bug samples at 10 stream sites within the Rocky Run Creek East Fork of the Chippewa River and Muskellunge Creek East Fork of the Chippewa River Watersheds. Water chemistry samples will be collected monthly from May -October for nutrients and TSS as close as possible to the pour points (confluence with the East Fork Chippewa River) of Rocky Run and Muskellunge Creeks. A single nutrient and TSS water chemistry sample will be taken during the summer months at 8 fish survey sites prior to conducting the survey. Sites TBD. Site access may result in changes to sampling locations, may need to sample the East Fork of the Chippewa river instead of Muskellunge Creek. HUC12 70500010208 & 70500010207.
