Big and Douglas Creeks (BR03) Watershed Planning

Purpose

Watershed specified for planning and assessment purposes. Assessment of water quality condition in this respective county will use protocols described in WisCALM of the year of assessment. Minimum assessment work includes biological data (macroinvertebrates, fish indices), chemistry and habitat data. Additional work includes identification of priorities and goals, creating recommendations for actions, and updating narratives for watersheds and waterbodies. Assessments are to be double checked by at least one additional biologist.

Activities & Recommendations
Monitor or Propose 303(d) Listing
Monitor Targeted Watershed Area (TWA)
Monitor Stressor Identification
Citizen-Based Stream Monitoring
• Monitoring of phosphorus concentrations in the streams of the Big-Douglas and Rathbone-Soper Creeks areas should continue as funding and volunteer efforts allow.
Protect Riparian or Shorelands
In areas with heavy grazing, managed grazing and rotational grazing could be implemented to protect riparian corridors. Other agricultural practices and nutrient management plans could help reduce erosion and runoff to streams.
Monitor Aquatic Biology
• Follow up monitoring should be completed on streams with poor IBI scores or lack of fish to further evaluate conditions.
Habitat Restoration - Instream
Habitat improvements could be implemented on streams that have documented steep eroding banks if funding becomes available.
