Pipe Creek TWA 2017-2018

Purpose

This project will evaluate water quality improvement/preservation efforts made in the Pipe Creek Watershed by Fond Du Lac County LWCD and NRCS.[TWA HUC12-040302030303] This is a Section 319 project.

Objective

This project will provide the water quality assessment to evaluate the effectiveness of watershed BMPs in the Pipe Creek Watershed on the East side of Lake Winnebago. In 2016, Fond Du Lac County LWCD received a Great Lakes Commission grant ($175,728) to reduce the phosphorus and sediment load in the Great Lakes, specifically the Pipe Creek Watershed. This project will provide the water quality data to determine whether or not the watershed improvements reduced the nutrient and sediment load to Pipe Creek and its downstream receiving waters. Eight locations will be monitored Total Phosphorus, Total Suspended Solids, Fish, Macroinvertebrates, Diatoms, Habitat, and Temperature. In addition, this monitoring will serve as follow-up monitoring for a fish kill in Pipe Creek in 2014 from a CAFO in the watershed. Five WBICs will be sampled during this project: 3000189, 132800, 5025714, 5025580, 5025742.

Outcome

Water quality monitoring will be conducted at 8 locations and final report written by 12/31/2018. This data will provide insight into the effectiveness of best management practices by a Great Lakes Grant.

Study Design

Aquatic macroinvertebrates will be collected at 8 locations in October 2017 (FY18). One day of sampling and 1 day to represerve and transport to UWSP. All data will be entered into SWIMS database by UWSP staff by 12/31/2018. Qualitative Habitat surveys will be conducted at 8 locations in FY18. Habitat data will be collected at each location during fish surveys and 1 day is needed to enter the data into database. All data will be entered into FMDB by Water Resources staff by 12/31/2017. Fish surveys will be conducted at 8 locations in FY18. Three days of sampling will be needed to complete the field surveys from July through September 2017. All fish data will be entered into the FMDB by Water Resources staff by 12/31/2017. Thermistors will be deployed at 8 locations from May to October 2017 to collect temperature data. Two sampling days will occur to deploy and retrieve the thermistors. All data will be uploaded into SWIMS by Water Resources staff by 12/31/2017. Inorganic chemistry (TP and TSS) monitoring will be conducted at 6 locations. Sampling will occur twice per month May through June 2017 for TP and TSS at 6 locations. Additionally, sampling for TP will be conducted once per month July through October 2017. Thirdly, sampling for TSS will be conducted once per month in July and October 2017 at 6 locations.
