The ultimate goal for this project is to understand the current ecological condition of Smoky Lake and develop actions that support its aesthetic qualities and ecosystem health over time. Supporting goals include identifying ecological threats and formulating responses to them; maintaining high quality aesthetic and recreational opportunities; engaging and educating the lake community; and developing actions that conserve native species and their habitats.

The Town of Phelps is sponsoring a LPL grant to study Smoky Lake, in Vilas County. The project will focus on developing a Lake Management Plan (LMP).
Project activities include: 1) Citizen participation - stakeholder survey and planning meetings (2-4); 2) Water quality sampling and analysis; 3) Updated bathymetry map; 4) Watershed assessment; 5) Shoreland and Coarse Woody Habitat assessment; 6) Collect and synthesize existing lake data; 7) Aquatic plant surveys (PI survey, community mapping and substrate mapping); 8) Data analysis; 9) Develop LMP.
