IRON COUNTY: Aquatic Invasive Species Education, Prevention & Outreach

Purpose

Iron County will sponsor a project to fund a position for a countywide AIS coordinator to develop and implement and AIS education and control program in the county. The project includes the following goals: 1) Develop a county-wide education and outreach AIS program to build awareness and prevent further spread of AIS into additional lakes and watersheds. Target audiences include: lake associations, lake recreational users, landowners, local businesses, schools, etc; 2) Monitor and document aquatic invasive species locations in Iron County; 3) Coordinate a partnership to organize AIS prevention and control efforts; 4) Manage AIS grant and develop funding opportunities for evolving AIS concerns. Project deliverables include: 1) Develop public education programs; 2) Provide annual report of project activities and accomplishments; 3) Develop AIS Strategic Plan; 4) Grant administration. Specific conditions for this Project: 1) The WDNR will be provided electronic and hard copies of all data and or reports/plans generated as a result of this project; 2) Provide Map of Sawyer County AIS locations to the lakes coordinator and enter them into SWIMS; 3) Provide annual progress reports to lakes coordinator; 4) Provide copy of draft strategic plan to Lake Coordinator for review; 5) Contact Erin Henneger (715-346-4978) and Laura Herman (715-365-8998) at UW-Extension to obtain assistance with training of the Clean Lakes/Clean Waters Program and AIS monitoring programs.
