Purpose
Project Scope and Description of Deliverables The University of Madison is sponsoring a surface water management grant to implement a Habitat Equivalency Analysis (HEA) to assess wild rice health and management strategies using a culturally responsible, whole ecosystem approach. Project final deliverables include: All data collected, HEA\2019s and reports. Specific project activities include: 1) During the first two years of the study, sample the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of rice stands in six lake systems in Vilas and Oneida Counties; 2) In years two and three, test how long wild rice seeds can remain dormant, the viability of long-stored seeds and if germination varies across water and sediment depths within rice bed habitats; 3) Expand network of partners to collaborate on developing and vetting wild rice health assessment tools; 4) Produce cultural and ecosystem characterizations for each of the six chosen research lakes; 5) Develop reports for each lake that also provides guidance for restoration and/or monitoring Special Conditions: 1) Draft HEA\2019s and reports need Dept review and approval. This scope summarizes the project detail provided in the application and does not negate tasks/deliverables described therein. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps, and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the regional Lake Biologist. If consultant is to provide final report, it is recommended that Grantee provide DNR Lake Coordinator with a draft for comment on report adequacy prior to making final payment to the consultant. DNR to receive an electronic .pdf copies of the reports along with, or prior to submission of grantee's final payment request.
