Purpose
Trout Unlimited is sponsoring a river restoration project that will replace two undersized culverts at Sauls Spring Road on the South Branch Oconto River. This project will reconnect over 15 miles of class 1 trout waters improving stream function, increasing flood resiliency and restoring nutrient & sediment transport. Culvert replacement will benefit native brook trout and other coldwater fish species as well as the macroinvertebrate community. Specific project activities include: 1) Finalize culvert designs using applicable models. 2) Install new bottomless concrete box culvert at Sauls Spring Road crossing to restore Aquatic Organism Passage (AOP). 3) Complete pre and post construction monitoring to ensure conditions at the crossing match natural stream conditions. 4) Complete summary report. Project final deliverables include: All design plans, USFS concurrence letter, operation and maintenance plan, and summary report including pre/post monitoring data and photographs. Specific conditions: 1) All permits must be issued before construction, and all regulatory requirements apply. 2) Culvert replacement will have a 25-year operation and maintenance plan recorded on property deed. 3) Will use Great Lakes Road Stream Crossing Inventory Method for the stream connectivity category and NRCS AOP Standard 396 to assess success.
