Purpose

The goal is to revitalize the venerable lake sturgeon of Lake Michigan by reconnecting existing populations with historic spawning and rearing habitat in the Menominee River.

Objective

Reconnecting will occur by providing fish passage up- and downstream around two hydro dams, less than a mile apart. EPA funds would allow for building a fish lift at one dam that will enable sturgeon to eventually pass both dams.

Outcome

Short-term outcome: 50-200 sturgeon passed upstream per year. Long-term: 21 miles of habitat re-opened and sturgeon population increased from 3K to up to 20K adults in 50-100 years.
