TOWN OF LA VALLE: Working Together to Monitor AIS

Purpose

The Town of LaValle would like to conduct education, monitoring, and planning for AIS in order to prevent new exotic species from reaching either of the town\2019s two lakes, Dutch Hollow Lake and Lake Redstone. Presentations about AIS will be made to residents and nearby high schools, where students will create infomercials for local media and boat landings and the town\2019s website. A Clean Boats-Clean Waters program will be enhanced at Dutch Hollow Lake, and begun at Lake Redstone, using volunteers. A lake use survey will also be conducted to assess the AIS threat. Interested participants will also identify and map current areas of known populations of extant AIS species, and students will generate a report to provide suggestions for future monitoring and prevention, presenting their findings to the lake District boards and the Town. A professional report detailing goals and outcomes of the grant will be produced. Education, planning and monitoring will continue through 2011.
