NELSON LAKE ASSOCIATION: Nelson Lake AIS Education/Prevention Project

Purpose

Nelson Lake in cooperation Sawyer County (AIS Coordinator) will implement an AIS prevention strategy. The goal is to educate people who use the lake about the problem of AIS and how to prevent the spread and prevent any introductions into Nelson Lake. Project goals include: 1) Continue the AIS lake monitoring program that was implemented in 2007; 2) Recruit and train new and replacement volunteers on monitoring procedure and AIS identification. Training will be made available to anyone interested; 3) Produce laminated key chains that will be distributed in the region; 4) Expand the Clean Boat/Clean Water Program that was implemented in 2007; 5) Maintain signage and kiosks that were installed in prior years on the highways and boat landings. Project deliverables include: 1) Provide training agenda for volunteer monitoring program; 2) Provide summary of monitoring results; 3) Provide laminated key chains to public; 4) Provide the department a summary of the volunteer AIS monitoring and number of hours/boaters contacted under Clean Boats, Clean Waters Program. Specific conditions for this project: 1) The WDNR will be provided electronic and hard copies of all data and or reports/plans generated as a result of this project; 2) Contact UW-Extension staff for information on training, workshops or educational materials for the Clean Boats/Clean Waters (Erin McFarlane, 715-346-4978) Program and AIS Monitoring (Laura Herman, 715-365-8998) Program.
