Proposed NER Pensaukee Lake Assessment

Purpose

This project is to collect water quality data on Pensauke Lake, due to concerns of declining WQ expressed by lake residents and the local Conservation Wardens. In addition the Shawano County Conservationist has been contacted in the past about concerns over manure application to lands north of the boat landing. The County Aquatic Invasive Species Specialist has also received complaints of increased weed and algae growth. White Clay lake nearby was put on the 303d list in 2012. The samples will be taken at two sites four times per year by a trained volunteer in accordance with the WisCALM guidelines.

Objective

Data will be used to determine if these lakes are impaired and this will drive the manamement decisions. The sample events will follow the WisCALM guidance. Pensaukee Lake WBIC is 415000. The first sampling site will be at the East basin at the Pensaukee river inlet and the second sampling site will be in the deep hole on the West Basin.

Outcome

This project will produce sufficient data for determining if the lake is impaired. A report will be produced that will analyze and summarize the data in a manner consistent with WisCALM. This will lead to a recommendation on whether or not to add the lake to the impaired waters list.

Study Design

1) There will be two sample sites associated with the project. 2) There will be 1 sampling event in 2012 and 3 sampling events in 2013 at each two sites. 3) The sampling will be completed in September of 2013. Two samples will be collected in the spring and three in the summer at each sampling site. 4) All data will be entered into the data base by October 2013. 5) The final report will be complete in November of 2013. 6) SWIMS will be used as the database for storage. 7) The Biologist or LTE will be responsible for entering the data.
