LONG LAKE OF PHELPS LAKE DISTRICT: Long Lake AIS Control & Prevention Project: 2013 - 2017

Purpose

Long Lake of Phelps Lake District is sponsoring an ACEI grant on Long Lake, in Vilas County. This project will focus on annual EWM management in Long Lake and also update the Long Lake Management Plan (LMP). Project activities include: 1) Annual chemical treatments and manual removal of EWM; 2) Annual pre/post treatment monitoring and analysis; 3) Annual volunteer AIS and herbicide concentration monitoring; 4) Implement volunteer boat washing by handing out boat wash tokens; 5) Conduct volunteer and paid watercraft inspections; 6) Entry of inspection and monitoring data onto SWIMS; 7) Point-intercept (PI) aquatic plant survey and community mapping; 8) Develop annual project report and an updated LMP plan. Project deliverables include: 1) Chemical and manual removal of EWM; 2) Pre/post treatment, PI survey and community mapping data; 3) Entered inspection and monitoring data onto SWIMS; 4) AIS educational, prevention and monitoring activities; 5) Annual reports and an updated LMP plan summarizing EWM management during project and future EWM management direction, boat washing activities, inspection activities, AIS monitoring and AIS educational activities. Specific Conditions for this project: Updated LMP needs Dept review and approval. WDNR Lakes Management Coordinator will be provided with an electronic (pdf or word) copy of updated LMP, all annual reports, all maps, all GIS, survey data (pre/post treatment and PI), and samples of educational and outreach products.

The LLPLD contracted with Onterra, LLC during the late-summer of 2017 to develop a management strategy for the increasing EWM population within Long Lake. With the assistance of Onterra, the LLPLD secured a WDNR ACEI grant to fund an EWM population management strategy from 2008-2012.
The Long Lake of Phelps Lake District solicited the services of Many Waters, LLC to use Diver Assisted Suction Harvesting (DASH) to manage for Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) on Long Lake, located near Phelps, Vilas County. DASH is a mechanical process and requires a mechanical harvesting permit (Form 3200-113 (R 10/16)) from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). The 2018 WDNR Mechanical Harvesting Permit ID is NO-2018-64-0090M.
In 2000 the presence of EWM was verified by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) from Long Lake, although it was suspected of inhabiting the system for years before this date. In 2006, the WDNR completed a point-intercept aquatic plant survey, locating EWM in approximately 26% of the littoral area of the lake (<18ft). Onterra was contracted by the Long Lake of Phelps Lake District (LLPLD) during the late-summer of 2007, where the majority of the littoral zone contained colonized EWM of which approximately 25 acres was found to be surface matted.

EWM management plan for 2013-2017 in Long Lake, Vilas County, WI
Eurasian water milfoil (EWM, Myriophyllum spicatum) was first documented in Long Lake in 2000. Since 2008, the Long Lake of Phelps District (LLPLD) has been actively managing and reducing the EWM population through strategically targeted herbicide spot treatments. With assistance from Onterra, the LLPLD was successfully awarded a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Established Population Control Grant in February 2013 to aid in funding the management of EWM within Long Lake from 2013-2017.
