BIG SAND LAKE PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION: Big Sand Lake Management Planning Project

Purpose

Big Sand Lake Property Owners Association is sponsoring an AEPP project to study Big Sand Lake, in Vilas County. The project will focus on developing a Lake Management Plan (LMP) for Big Sand Lake. Project activities include: 1) Stakeholder participation \2013 stakeholder survey, planning meetings (up to 2), kick-off meeting, wrap-up meeting, news release(s), and newsletter article; 2) Water quality sampling and analysis; 3) Watershed assessment and P load modeling; 4) Fisheries assessment; 5) Shoreline and coarse woody habitat assessment; 6) Early season AIS monitoring and professional Dreissena monitoring; 7) Aquatic plant surveys (PI survey, community mapping, substrate mapping); 8) Purchase GPS; 9) Data analysis; 10) Develop LMP. Project deliverables include: 1) Stakeholder survey, news release(s), and newsletter article; 2) Water chemistry data; 3) Watershed maps and modeling data; 4) PI, shoreland, and coarse woody habitat data; 5) Aquatic plant community and substrate maps; 6) GPS; 7) LMP. Specific conditions for this project: 1) Draft of stakeholder survey needs to be submitted to Lakes Management Coordinator for review and approval before sending to public; 2) Draft of LMP needs Dept review and approval. WDNR Lakes Management Coordinator will be provided with an electronic (pdf or word) copy of LMP, news release(s), newsletter article, stakeholder survey, data from PI, shoreland assessment, coarse woody habitat assessment, watershed assessment and water quality sampling, all maps from project, and all GIS data.

Laboratory report for Big Sand Lake in the Deep Hole.
Big Sand Lake Comprehensive Lake Management Plan in Vilas County. Big Sand Lake has an acreage of 1434 acres, with a watershed to lake area ration of 3:1. The max depth is 56 feet with a mean depth of 12.5 feet. There are 54 native plant species to the lake, one submersed exotic plant species (Eurasian water milfoil) is known to exist in the lake; it was first discovered in 1990. The lake is a sought after water body for recreationists and anglers.
