SQUASH LAKE ASSOC: Squash Lake AIS Control & Prevention Project: Hand Harvesting 2014-2016

Purpose

Squash Lake Association is sponsoring an ACEI grant on Squash Lake, in Oneida County. This project will focus on EWM management. Project activities include: 1) Annual DASH and professional hand-harvesting of EWM; 2) Annual early-season AIS and EWM peak biomass survey, analysis and mapping; 3) Annual volunteer AIS monitoring, harvesting and diver assistance; 4) Point-intercept (PI) aquatic plant survey and community mapping; 5) Develop annual project report. Project deliverables include: 1) Harvested EWM; 2) Peak biomass, PI survey and community mapping data; 3) AIS educational, prevention and monitoring activities; 4) Annual reports summarizing EWM management during project and future EWM management direction, AIS monitoring and AIS educational activities. Specific Conditions for this project: Annual reports need Dept review and approval. WDNR Lakes Management Coordinator will be provided with an electronic (pdf or word) copy of all annual reports, all maps, all GIS, survey data, and samples of educational and outreach products.

Reports and Documents
Onterra, LLC issued its final report on Surface Water Grant ACEI-156-14 in January, 2017. Subsequently, the Squash Lake Association issued an addendum to that report in June, 2017 to report on the implemented update to its Lake Management Plan goals and objectives that resulted from Onterra’s final report. This 2nd Addendum is submitted to report on the activities and deliverables completed under the extension the DNR granted to the Squash Lake Association for ACEI-156-14. DNR grant ACEI-156-14 original end-date of June 30, 2017 was extended to a new end-date of December 31, 2017. The reason for the extension was a $9577.33 grant balance remaining unpaid.
In 2009, the non-native, invasive plant Eurasian water milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum; EWM) was discovered in Squash Lake. Following its discovery, the Squash Lake Association, Inc. (SLA) contracted with Onterra, and in September of 2009 Onterra ecologists completed a lake-wide meander-based survey aimed at locating and mapping locations of EWM. The 2009 survey revealed that EWM was present within near-shore areas around the lake, but in very low abundance. The results of this survey along with potential management options were presented to members of SLA. After reviewing these options, the association decided to move forward with an aggressive hand-harvesting effort in hopes of reducing/maintaining a low-density EWM population in Squash Lake.
The Squash Lake Association solicited the services of Many Waters, LLC to use Diver Assisted Suction Harvesting (DASH) to manage for Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) on Squash Lake located in Oneida County, WI. DASH is a mechanical process and requires a mechanical harvesting permit (Form 3200-113 (R 3/04)) from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). The 2015 WDNR Permit ID is NO-2015-44-50M.
