BARRON COUNTY: Barron County Aquatic Invasive Species Project

Purpose

Barron Co. Soil & Water Conservation Dept. in partnership with several lake associations and districts is sponsoring a one-year countywide AIS project and summer internship to do the following activities: Eurasian watermilfoil and purple loosestrife monitoring and management; other AIS (e.g. zebra mussel, rusty crayfish, and curly-leaf pondweed) monitoring; and a Clean Boats Clean Water watercraft inspection program. If a new AIS infestation is found, the Intern and County will work with the respective lake group to develop a rapid response plan and/or an AIS plan that meets the requirements of NR 198.43. Project deliverables include: 1. A project report/assessment of education and outreach activities, monitoring activities, and data collected including a description of the extent of AIS in Barron Co., detail on control measures, and a strategy for future management, as well as the information in 2-6. 2. Maps of purple loosestrife and Eurasian watermilfoil locations and densities. 3. Prioritized list of boat landings for watercraft inspection and explanation of how priorities were developed. 4. Clean Boats Clean Waters data collection summary. Data collected must include those data required as part of the CBCW program and must be entered in the statewide database. 5. Purple loosestrife project summary. 6. Examples of educational/outreach materials developed. Special Conditions 1. Any new identification of an aquatic invasive species must be immediately reported to the Department. 2. The Eurasian watermilfoil monitoring will be presence/absence monitoring. The Department may provide standardized methods for AIS monitoring. 3. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the regional Lake Coordinator. A draft report/deliverables will be submitted to the regional Lake Coordinator for review before finalization.
