OCONTO COUNTY: LCO-Oconto County Lakes Classification Project

Purpose

Oconto County proposes to conduct a lake classification study on their lakes in the county. This study will provide county decision makers and staff with useful tools for designing, implementing, evaluating programs, rules and management options; and to improve effectiveness of future comprehensive planning efforts, as well as the implementation of the Land and Water Resource Managment Plan for the county. Project deliverables include a database and matrix of Oconto County lakes categorized by development potential, extent of development, and potential sensitivity to environmental damage; a continuous information and education program, including early public information on the values of shoreland property protection, introduction to the process of visioning for county waters, and consensus facilitation with a wide variety of stakeholders; a package of proposed resource protection strategies and programs for possible inclusion in the county's comprehensive plan; a draft of an Oconto County Shoreland Protection Manual explaining lake classification, what programs for shoreline protection are available and voluntary measures landowners, contractors, and recreational users may all apply to do their part in protecting the lakes they use; displays, videos, teaching materials; a lakes classification proposal for consideration by the Oconto County Planning and Zoning Committee; and a final report explaining this project and its results.
