Watershed - Wolf River - Langlade and Evergreen Rive (WR18)
Wolf River - Langlade and Evergreen Rive Watershed

Details

The Wolf River/Langlade and Evergreen Rivers Watershed is in north central Menominee and eastern Langlade Counties covering 147 square miles. The watershed includes the Wolf River from the mouth of the Evergreen River in Menominee County, north to below the mouth of the Lily River in Langlade County. The entire stretch of the Wolf River above the Menominee County line is included in Chapter NR 102, Wisconsin Administrative Code, as an Outstanding Resource Water. This watershed has generally good water quality. The problems associated with the heavy recreational use on the Wolf River and the natural impacts of beaver activity are the main concerns. The mainstem Wolf River flows for 33 miles through this watershed. The Wolf River downstream from the Village of Lily is a favorite attraction for canoeing, float trips and other recreational activities. Its heavy use has created some problems with immediate bank damage, compaction and littering. The Town of Wolf River has begun to address some of these problems by prohibiting disposable containers on the Wolf River. The Evergreen River extends for 20 miles through Langlade and Menominee counties. The river is a Class I trout stream. In Langlade County, the watershed is about 60 percent wooded or wild; in Menominee, nearly 100 percent is wooded or wild. As with most streams in this watershed, the Evergreen River is affected by intense beaver activity. As a result, Antigo fish management staff conducted beaver control projects in the Langlade county reach in 1993. The Evergreen River State Fishery Area is located here with 80-90 percent of the shoreline in state ownership.

Ecological Landscapes for Wolf River - Langlade and Evergreen Rive Watershed

Ecological Landscapes

The Wolf River - Langlade and Evergreen Rivers watershed is located in two ecological landscapes: the Forest Transition Ecological Landscape is found in the southern two thirds of the watershed and the North Central Forest Ecological Landscape is found in the northern portion. The Forest Transition Ecological Landscape lies along the northern border of Wisconsin's Tension Zone, through the central and western part of the state, and supports both northern forests and agricultural areas. The central portion of the Forest Transition lies primarily on a glacial till plain deposited by glaciation between 25,000 and 790,000 years ago. The eastern and western portions are on moraines of the Wisconsin glaciation. The growing season in this part of the state is long enough that agriculture is viable, although climatic conditions are not as favorable as in southern Wisconsin. Soils are diverse, ranging from sandy loam to loam or shallow silt loam, and from poorly drained to well drained. The historic vegetation of the Forest Transition was primarily northern hardwood forest. These northern hardwoods were dominated by sugar maple and hemlock, and contained some yellow birch, red pine and white pine. Currently, over 60% of this Ecological Landscape is non-forested. Forested areas consist primarily of northern hardwoods and aspen, with smaller amounts of oak and lowland hardwoods. The eastern portion of the Ecological Landscape differs from the rest of the area in that it remains primarily forested, and includes some ecologically significant areas. Throughout the Ecological Landscape, small areas of conifer swamp are found near the headwaters of streams, and associated with lakes in kettle depressions on moraines. Ground flora show characteristics of both northern and southern Wisconsin, as this Ecological Landscape lies along the Tension Zone. The North Central Forest Ecological Landscape occupies much of the northern third of Wisconsin. Its landforms are characterized by end and ground moraines with some pitted outwash and bedrock controlled areas. Kettle depressions and steep ridges are found in the northern portion. Two prominent areas in this Ecological Landscape are the Penokee-Gogebic Iron Range in the north extending into Michigan, and Timm's Hill, the highest point in Wisconsin (1,951 feet) in the south. Soils consist of sandy loam, sand, and silts. The vegetation is mainly forest, with many wetlands and some agriculture, though the growing season is not as favorable as it is in southern Wisconsin. Lake Superior greatly influences the northern portion of the Ecological Landscape especially during the winter season, producing greater snowfall than in most areas in Wisconsin. The historic vegetation was primarily hemlock-hardwood forest dominated by hemlock, sugar maple, and yellow birch. There were some smaller areas of white and red pine forest scattered throughout the Ecological Landscape, and individual white pines trees were a component of the hemlock-hardwood forest. Harvesting hemlock to support the tanneries was common at the turn of the century, and the species soon became a minor component of forests due to over-harvesting and lack of regeneration. Currently, forests cover approximately 80% of this Ecological Landscape. The northern hardwood forest is dominant, made up of sugar maple, basswood, and red maple, and also including some scattered hemlock and white pine pockets within stands. The aspen-birch forest type group is also relatively abundant, followed by spruce-fir. A variety of wetland community types also are present, both forested and non-forested.

Pickerel Chain Lakes Association: Lmi - Little Pickerel Aeration Implementation Project: The Pickerel Chain Association proposes to install an aerator in Little Pickerel Lake. The project elements and deliverables are specified in the Pickerel Lake\2019s Protection Grant application, dated February 1, 2017.

This grant will fund the installation of an aeration system in Little Pickerel Lake. The aeration system will be installed in 2017 using PCLA members and assisted by the Oconto County WDNR fisheries staff for placing the airline and diffusers. Providing electric power and completing the on-shore preparation work to house the system compressors will occur in late summer/fall. Placement of the system airlines and diffusers into the lake will occur in the fall of 2017. Signing at all public access points to all three lakes of the chain will be placed prior to the ground freezing and the lake forming an ice cover. Open water safety fencing will be installed using the same type fencing system used on Pickerel Lake and will be placed by PCLA members once safe ice for foot travel is present.

If consultant is to provide the final report, it is recommended that the Grantee provide the DNR Lake Coordinator with a draft for comment on report adequacy prior to making final payment to the consultant. DNR will be provided both paper and electronic .pdf copies of the final report along with, or prior to, submission of grantee\2019s final payment request. All information associated with this project is subject to public record.
