Purpose

The purpose of this project is to collect water quality and flow data to be used in developing a SWAT model for the Lake Pepin TMDL. Lake Pepin is currently on Minnesota's 303d list for turbidity and phosphorus and is expected to eventually be added to the Wisconsin 303d list. Stakeholder and technical support groups have been formed and have been meeting for several years to develop a TMDL that will have significant implications for Wisconsin. Monitoring includes a USGS flow monitoring station and collection of water chemistry samples. Samples are being collected by a local volunteer following TMDL monitoring technical guidance (WDNR 2001) for two years, including bi-weekly sampling and storm chasing. Water quality parameters include total P, dissolved P, total suspended solids and turbidity. Sampling began in October 2006 and will end in September 2008. .

Objective

The objective of this project is to continue to collect sufficient flow and water quality information to develop a SWAT model for the watershed. The SWAT model outputs will contribute to development of the Lake Pepin TMDL. This proposal will provide lab support and shipping expenses for the final three months (July-Sept.) of a two year project.

Outcome

Samples will be collected every two weeks plus storm chasing from July 1 - September 30. We anticipate that in addition to 6 bi-weekly samples, there will be about 6 storm event samples, for a total of 12 samples. A local volunteer is collecting all the samples and sending them to the SLOH for analysis.
