WAUKESHA COUNTY LAND CONSERVANCY: Qualitative Mussel Inventory of Waukesha County Streams

Purpose

The Waukesha County Land Conservancy will hire a contractor to conduct a baseline mussel inventory of Waukesha County streams with year one streams to include Genesse Creek, Spring Brook, Pebble Brook, Red Wing Creek, Battle Creek, Scuppernong Creek and Mill Brook. The survey will be conducted by snorkel or wading in the stream. Point data will be generated and distributed to WI Mussel Atlas, WI DNR Natural Heritage and UW-Madison Zoology Museum. Long-term qualitative monitoring survey points for mussel species will be developed. Changes in the distribution and relative abundance of freshwater mussels will be determined by revisiting historical survey sites. A species list of native and invasives species by location in stream will be developed. One news article and a presentation on first year results and basic mussel biology will be provided to local citizens. The DNR will be provided two paper copies and an electronic copy of the final report.
