Lower Peshtigo River TWA WQM Plan, 2017

Purpose

This project monitored and evaluated streams in the Lower Peshtigo River Watershed in Marinette and Oconto Counties. Just under 50% of the streams and rivers in this watershed have unknown fish and aquatic life conditions. Two hydropower dams exist on the Peshtigo River system in the watershed and use peaking operation. Basin assessment monitoring was recommended in historic watershed plan recommendations but has never been conducted. Marinette County is seeking to develop a 9-Key Element plan for a HUC-12 sub-watershed or the entire Lower Peshtigo River Watershed. The monitoring will help support and guide the development of the 9-Key Element plan by gathering baseline data and eliminating data gaps. The data will also be used to determine current and potential biological uses and evaluate stream conditions for possible future monitoring for 303(d) or ERW/ORW status, use of information for making management recommendations, updating waterbody and watershed narratives in WATERS and use in watershed planning.

Objective

Surveys will be completed at approximately 30 sites throughout the Little Peshtigo River watershed to collect data to evaluate stream conditions. Each of the sites will have 3 field visits. One visit for reconnaissance and temperature logger deployment, one visit for fish and habitat surveys, and one visit for macroinvertebrate sampling and temperature logger retrieval. These 30 sites will be monitored for continuous temperature from May through October. Macroinvertebrate samples will be collected in fall from all 30 sites. Sampling stations have yet to be determined

Outcome

Background data for use by Marinette County in developing a 9-Key Elements Plan, possible future monitoring for 303(d) or ERW/ORW status, use of information for making management recommendations, updating waterbody and watershed narratives in WATERS and use in watershed planning.

The lower segment of Trout Creek should be considered for listing on the States 303(d) list of impaired waters for a degraded macroinvertebrate community.
Monitor Aquatic Biology
Conduct additional TP monitoring, Fish and Macroinvertebrate monitoring on Trout Creek upstream of Jandt Road.
Monitor to Evaluate Projects
Investigate the installation of an unauthorized rock dam upstream of Loop Lake Road that may act as a fish passage barrier.
