St. Louis River Estuary of Lake Superior (WBIC- 2751220) Aquatic Vegetation Assessment - NOR 6_11

Purpose

Continue St. Louis River aquatic plant inventory in Weasel Bay. (Weasel Bay inventory had been planned in 2009, but all available time was used on Pokegama Bay survey.) Weasel Bay represents a clear-water bay upstream of other tributaries that are red-clay influenced plant communities.

Objective

This project supports the ISS statewide aquatic plant inventory and is a continuation of sites started in 2008 (along with Amnicon River mouth, Hog Island Inlet, and Allouez Bay) and 2009 (Pokegama Bay). Completion of Weasel Bay will provide plant data that represents non-red clay influenced habitat. Currently, there are no known aquatic invasive plants present in this area, but this survey will determine existing status, and provide baseline conditions for future changes.

Outcome

Performance Measures: 1) Number of sample sites: one designated bay area, overlayed with point-intercept plant-sample sites. 2) Number of sampling events: one survey. 3) Estimated date when sample collection will be complete. 4) Estimated date: between mid-July to mid-August, 2010. 5) Estimated date when final report will be complete: Spring, 2011 (summary report for 3-years of surveys; all data has been collected for previous 2 years).
