Kinnickinnic River (MI01) Watershed Planning

Purpose

Watershed plan update 2010. This is watershed plan for the Kinnickinnic River Watershed, the smallest (33 square miles) and most urban of the Milwaukee River Basin watersheds. This watershed includes the 25-square-mile drainage area of the Kinnickinnic River, plus areas discharging directly to Lake Michigan. The watershed is located within the southern portion of Milwaukee County and contains 25 miles of perennial streams and seven park ponds, but no lakes are found within the watershed. Th e Kinnickinnic River is the only offi cially named stream, and comprises about half of the total stream miles in the watershed. Land cover in this watershed is mostly urban (90%), with park/recreational lands (5.3%) and woodlands (1.5%) creating open spaces. Remaining wetlands comprise only 0.36 percent of the land area. prise only 0.2 percent of the land area.

Study Design

Watershed specified for planning and assessment purposes. Assessment of water quality condition in this respective county will use protocols described in WisCALM of the year of assessment. Minimum assessment work includes biological data (macroinvertebrates, fish indices), chemistry and habitat data. Additional work includes identification of priorities and goals, creating recommendations for actions, and updating narratives for watersheds and waterbodies. Assessments are to be double checked by at least one additional biologist.
