Historical Description
Source: 1971, Surface Water Resources of Rusk County Dairyland Reservoir, (Lake Flambeau) T35N, R5W, Sections: several
A soft water drainage impoundment on the Flambeau River, and the largest body of water is Rusk County. Upstream is the Big Falls Flowage, and downstream is the Ladysmith Flowage. There is a power dam with a 68-foot head at the outlet owned by the Dairyland Power Co-operative, and the outlet flow is estimated at 1,550 cfs. (based on 50% discharge time record). There is a varied fish population of muskellunge, northern pike, walleyes, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegills, black crappies, rock bass, smallmouth bass, bluegills, black catfish, and rock sturgeon. Rough fish include white suckers and redhorse. Of the four streams entering the flowage, one, Josie Creek, is trout water. The shoreline is a mixture of grass and hardwood uplands, with one area of shrub swamp and sedge marsh. Nesting ducks are common, and there is some use by migratory waterfowl. Furbearers use is minor. Private development amounts to 45 cottages. About 0.23 mile of shoreline, is in two county parks. One park is located on the southeast corner of the flowage near the dam, while the other park is at the outlet of Josie Creek. Both parks provide picnicking and access. There is a total of eight public accesses, seven of them with parking. There are also five undeveloped platted access sites on the flowage.

Management Goals
Wisconsin's Water Quality Standards provide qualitative and quantitative goals for waters that are protective of Fishable, Swimmable conditions [Learn more]. Waters that do not meet water quality standards are considered impaired and restoration actions are planned and carried out until the water is once again fishable and swimmable
Management goals can include creation or implementation of a Total Maximum Daily Load analysis, a Nine Key Element Plan, or other restoration work, education and outreach and more. If specific recommendations exist for this water, they will be displayed below online.
Monitoring
Monitoring the condition of a river, stream, or lake includes gathering physical, chemical, biological, and habitat data. Comprehensive studies often gather all these parameters in great detail, while lighter assessment events will involve sampling physical, chemical and biological data such as macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish communities integrate watershed or catchment condition, providing great insight into overall ecosystem health. Chemical and habitat parameters tell researchers more about human induced problems including contaminated runoff, point source dischargers, or habitat issues that foster or limit the potential of aquatic communities to thrive in a given area. Wisconsin's Water Monitoring Strategy was recenty updated.

Watershed Characteristics
Dairyland Reservoir (Flambeau) is located in the Lower Flambeau River watershed which is 128.62 miĀ². Land use in the watershed is primarily forest (56.40%), wetland (23.20%) and a mix of grassland (6.50%) and other uses (13.70%). This watershed has 152.37 stream miles, 252.03 lake acres and 13,319.28 wetland acres.
Nonpoint Source Characteristics
This watershed is ranked Not Ranked for runoff impacts on streams, Low for runoff impacts on lakes and Low for runoff impacts on groundwater and therefore has an overall rank of Low. This value can be used in ranking the watershed or individual waterbodies for grant funding under state and county programs. However, all waters are affected by diffuse pollutant sources regardless of initial water quality. Applications for specific runoff projects under state or county grant programs may be pursued. For more information, go to surface water program grants.
