Regional 303d Lake Monitoring: Trow Lake (1711500), Oakwood Lake(1713200), Lake Dexter (1369900) and Lake Marinuka (1678200) WCR_01_09

Purpose

WCR Watershed staff will monitor Trow and Oakwood Lakes in Jackson County, Lake Dexter in Wood County and Lake Marinuka in Trempealeau County every two weeks from July through mid September. Trow and Oakwood lakes are impoundments on Halls Creek in Jackson County, Dexter is an impoundment on the Yellow River, Wood County and Marinuka is an impoundment on Beaver Creek. Water chemistry samples will be collected five times during this time period and analyzed for total phosphorus and chlorophyll a. Field parameters will also be collected including dissolved oxygen and temperatures profiles, pH and secchi disk readings. A YSI continuous profiling sonde is requested as part of this project.

Objective

Trow Lake was added to the 303 d list based on one pH exceedence collected in 1995. No recent data is availbable for Trow or Oakwood lakes. One summer of data is available for Dexter and Marinuka, but not enough to list the water as being impaired. The data will be summarized and evaluated using the draft Assessment Methodology and nutrient criteria for lakes. The guidance and criteria will be used to determine if the lakes should be on the 303 d list.

Outcome

Water samples will be collected every two weeks starting in July and concluding in early September. Samples will be collected from four lakes so the total number of samples equals 20. SWIMS will be used to generate labslips so the data will automatically be uploaded into SWIMs when analysis is completed at the SLOH. A final report will not be completed but the data may be used to fill out 303 d data documentation sheets if listing or delisting is recommended.
