Lower Little Wolf TWA WQM Plan, 2017

Purpose

This project will evaluate water quality improvements made in the Lower Little Wolf River Watershed from Best Management Practices installed in the watershed from 1997 through 2008 as part of the Lower Little Wolf River Priority Watershed Project. [TWA HUC10-0403020217]

Objective

This project will evaluate the effectiveness of BMPs installed in 4 HUC 12 watersheds in the Lower Little Wolf River HUC 10-0403020217 watershed following a Priority Watershed Project in 1997. This project determined if the goals of the Priority Watershed Project to protect and improve the watershed water quality were met. Monitoring will be conducted in 9 WBICs: 279600, 280100, 272400, 280700, 280900, 283000, 283100, 283400, 284900. Aquatic macroinvertebrate samples will be collected at 11 locations. Quantitative Habitat assessments will be conducted at 11 locations. Fish surveys will be conducted at 14 locations. Temperature thermistors will be deployed at 16 locations. Inorganic chemistry (TP, TDP, TSS and NO3) monitoring will be conducted at 12 locations.

Outcome

Water quality monitoring will be conducted at 18 locations. Aquatic macroinvertebrates will be collected at 11 locations in October 2015. Two days of sampling and 1 day to represerve and transport to UWSP. All data will be entered into SWIMS database by UWSP staff by 12/30/2016. Quantitative Habitat surveys will be conducted at 11 locations in FY16. Four sampling days in FY16 are needed to complete this monitoring and 1 day to enter the data into database. All data will be entered into FMDB by Water Resources staff by 12/31/2015. Fish surveys will be conducted at 14 locations in FY16. Six days of sampling will be completed for the field surveys from July through September 2015. All fish data will be entered into the FMDB by Water Resources staff by 12/31/2015. Thermistors will be deployed at 16 locations from May to October 2015 to collect temperature data. Six sampling days will occur to deploy and retrieve the thermistors. All data will be uploaded into SWIMS by Water Resources staff by 06/30/2016. Inorganic chemistry (TP, TDP, TSS and NO3) monitoring will be conducted at 12 locations. Sampling will occur once per month May through October 2015 for TP at 12 locations. Sampling will occur once per month May through October 2015 for TSS at 10 locations. Sampling for TDP and NO3 at 12 locations once per month in May, July, and September 2015. All samples will be sent to Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene for analysis and will be entered by the lab into SWIMS by 06/30/2016. A final report will be written and attached to this project by 12/31/2016.

Study Design

Aquatic macroinvertebrate samples will be collected at 11 locations. Quantitative Habitat assessments will be conducted at 11 locations. Fish surveys will be conducted at 14 locations. Activities & Recommendations
Monitor Targeted Watershed Area (TWA)
This project will evaluate water quality improvements made in the Lower Little Wolf River Watershed from Best Management Practices installed in the watershed from 1997 through 2008 as part of the Lower Little Wolf River Priority Watershed Project. [TWA HUC10-0403020217]. Monitoring will be conducted in 9 WBICs: 279600, 280100, 272400, 280700, 280900, 283000, 283100, 283400, 284900.
Best Management Practices, Implement
The department should work with Waupaca County LWCD and NRCS to implement BMPs to reduce non-point source sediment and nutrients reaching surface waters from stream bank and cropland erosion.
Monitor or Propose 303(d) Listing
Little and Thiel Creeks should be added to the state’s 2018 303(d) list of impaired waters due to the pollutant phosphorus. The department should increase the water quality monitoring in these sub-watersheds to determine which areas within the sub-watershed need BMPs to reduce phosphorus delivery to the streams.
Monitor Water Quality or Sediment
Monitoring of phosphorus and nitrate concentrations in the streams of the Lower Little Wolf River should continue.
Monitor Water Quality or Sediment
Monitoring of temperature, phosphorus, and sediment concentrations above and below Big Falls and Manawa should continue to assess the impacts from the millponds on the water quality of the River.
