Birch (Yellow) Lake, T-40-N, R-10-E, Sections 21 and 22,
Area = 185 Surface Acres, Maximum Depth = 14 feet
A moderately fertile drainage lake, Yellow Birch has clear
water of moderate transparency. Low transparency readings
sometimes occur, due to the algal response to the lake's fertility.
The bottom material is principally sand and gravel with some
rockand muck also present. Both the inlet and the outlet of the
lake are considered to be freely navigable, as the lake is part of
the Eagle Chain. The lake is considered to be a
muskellunge-walleye lake with walleyes abundant. Largemouth bass
are also a common species in the lake. Crayfish are a current
problem in this lake. Public use opportunities are good. Access
is possible by a city landing and there are two resorts on the
shore of the lake. There are 38 dwellings or cottages along the
shore.

Monitoring
Monitoring the condition of a river, stream, or lake includes gathering physical, chemical, biological, and habitat data. Comprehensive studies often gather all these parameters in great detail, while lighter assessment events will involve sampling physical, chemical and biological data such as macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish communities integrate watershed or catchment condition, providing great insight into overall ecosystem health. Chemical and habitat parameters tell researchers more about human induced problems including contaminated runoff, point source dischargers, or habitat issues that foster or limit the potential of aquatic communities to thrive in a given area.
