Overview
Lake Nokomis, in the Lower Tomahawk River Watershed, is a 2,274.24 acre impoundment that falls in Lincoln and Oneida Counties. This impoundment is managed for fishing and swimming and is currently not considered impaired.

Historical Description
Source: 1966, Surface Water Resources of Oneida County Nokomis Lake, T36N, R6E, Section 34 Surface Acres = 1,950.4, S.D.F. = 4.76, Maximum Depth = 18 feet.
A soft water drainage lake having slightly alkaline, light brown water of low transparency. Sand is the predominant littoral material with significant areas of gravel and rubble with some boulders and muck. The shoreline is predominantly upland (93 percent) with wetland adjoining a limited portion of the lake basin. Muskellunge, northern pike, walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, perch, bluegill, crappie, rock bass, pumpkinseed, bullhead and redhorse are fish species inhabiting this lake. Public access with parking is available. Forty resorts, a private campground and 260 dwellings are located on the lakeshore. Mallard, black duck, blue-winged teal, wood duck and loon use this lake as a nesting site. Puddle ducks, diving ducks and Canada geese use this lake on their spring and fall migrations. This lake is actually an impoundment with water levels maintained by a water control structure of 13 feet head located on the outlet of the Rice River Flowage.

Management Goals
Wisconsin's Water Quality Standards provide qualitative and quantitative goals for waters that are protective of Fishable, Swimmable conditions [Learn more]. Waters that do not meet water quality standards are considered impaired and restoration actions are planned and carried out until the water is once again fishable and swimmable
Management goals can include creation or implementation of a Total Maximum Daily Load analysis, a Nine Key Element Plan, or other restoration work, education and outreach and more. If specific recommendations exist for this water, they will be displayed below online.
Monitoring
Monitoring the condition of a river, stream, or lake includes gathering physical, chemical, biological, and habitat data. Comprehensive studies often gather all these parameters in great detail, while lighter assessment events will involve sampling physical, chemical and biological data such as macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish communities integrate watershed or catchment condition, providing great insight into overall ecosystem health. Chemical and habitat parameters tell researchers more about human induced problems including contaminated runoff, point source dischargers, or habitat issues that foster or limit the potential of aquatic communities to thrive in a given area. Wisconsin's Water Monitoring Strategy was recenty updated.

Lake Nokomis is located in the Lower Tomahawk River watershed which is 133.87 miĀ². Land use in the watershed is primarily forest (58.70%), wetland (29.50%) and a mix of open (7.50%) and other uses (4.20%). This watershed has 107.64 stream miles, 5,219.67 lake acres and 23,295.39 wetland acres.
