German Valley Creek (909200) and Pleasant Valley Creek(908500) SP-12 monitoring SCR_02_09

Purpose

Monitoring of these two streams will take place in order to comply with the EPA SP-12 measure to show improved water quality conditions. Each stream has had major rehabilitation of the watershed and stream corridor. This monitoring will determine whether or not these streams are meeting their natural attainable use and can subsequently be removed from the state's list of impaired waters. Fish IBI, macroinvertebrate IBI/HBI, and habitat measurements will be collected at several sites on each stream and compared with pre-rehabilitation data. Region staff will collect samples during the sampling season in the calendar year 2008. Additional fish monitoring is expected to be conducted in calendar year 2009.

Objective

In accordance with the SP-12 measure, determine if water quality conditions of these two streams has improved. Determine if these streams are now meeting there attainable use and can be removed from the 303(d) list.

Outcome

Four sites will be monitored on each respective stream. Each site will require two visits (1 for fish IBI/HI and 1 for bugs) Sample collection will be completed in fall, 2008 Fish and habitat data will be entered into the FH database by December, 2008. Macroinvertebrate data will be entered as soon as available. Report will be completed in the fall of 2009 after completion of the second round of fish sampling in summer, 2009.

Monitor to Evaluate Projects
Each stream [German Valley Creek (909200) and Pleasant Valley Creek(908500)] has had major rehabilitation of the watershed and stream corridor. This monitoring will determine whether or not these streams are meeting their natural attainable use and can subsequently be removed from the state's list of impaired waters.
Monitor Water Quality or Sediment

Control Streambank Erosion
German Valley Creek Middle - Installation of streambank restoration and protection practices. Each stream has had major rehabilitation of the watershed and stream corridor. The water quality objective of the project was to reduce stream bank erosion by 90% resulting in an overall reduction of sediment load of over 7300 tons/year over the whole area of the project. In all, almost 50,000 feet of stream bank was shaped and stabilized, and over 600 fish habitat structures (LUNKERS and weirs) were added to the stream.
