City Of Middleton: Water Lettuce & Hyacinth: The City of Middleton proposes to manually remove the large population of water lettuce and minor population of water hyacinth from two detention ponds in Orchid Heights Park, Middleton, as well as a small number of plants that have been transported downstream into the Pheasant Branch Marsh. All plants larger than 2\201D in diameter will be removed to prevent viable seed production because there is a risk that the seeds could overwinter in microhabitats kept warm by groundwater fed springs through the winter. Education of local residents will also take place, and the sites will be monitored for these species in 2011.

Friends Of Pheasant Branch: Wetland Invasive Plant Control Planning: The Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy, Inc., proposes to develop a multi-phase, multi-year plan for controlling AIS plants in the wetlands of the conservancy, especially around the big springs that feed the creek. Reed canary grass, hybrid cattail and watercress are outcompeting native plant species, and these invasives require a comprehensive, long-term strategy to reduce their dominance and encourage competition of the natives. Plant inventories, soil samples and water data will be gathered in order to prepare the plan. Signage, newsletter articles and guided field trips will be used to engage and educate the public at all steps in the plan. The final report will consist of electronic and hard copy of all raw data, plus the final plan, and a description of all public outreach efforts made.

City Of Madison: Infos Model For Yahara Lakes: "The City of Madison proposes to develop the first phase of an evaluation and prediction model for the upper half of the Yahara Watershed, called Integrated Nowcast and Forecast Operation System (INFOS). This is a real-time, three-dimensional, operational model that can provide information to lake managers to assess water level orders in conjunction with dam operations on the Yahara system, predict flood heights under various scenarios which may assist planning efforts, and identify constrictions that need to be removed to reduce flooding. The model can help define floodplain zones for improved planning, among other benefits. The deliverable will consist of a final report in hard copy and electronic copy describing the web browser interface, and give the final site address of the online model. All raw data will be included in digital format."

Dane County: Algae Boom Study- Dane Co: Dane County is investigating the utility of beach booms to improve water quality for swimmers at area beaches. The booms are intended to divert floating planktonic algae scums from the beach areas being tested. Since they received the initial grant ((SPL-226-10, \201CAlgae Boom Study \2013 Dane County\201D), the scope of this project has expanded, advancing the knowledge even further than originally intended, and they are working with many more partners. In 2010, Dane County partnered with City of Madison Engineering and Parks, DNR, and UW Limnology staff, and used county funds to purchase and install floating booms around the swim areas of Bernie\2019s and BB Clarke Beach to act as deflectors for floating weeds and algae scum. The first year was a success and the project was expanded to Brittingham Beach in 2011.
In 2011, the County Board allocated additional funding for beach deflector pilot projects, and those funds are being used in 2012 to support purchase and installation of an additional floating boom system at Warner Beach in the City of Madison, in order to keep algae scum and nuisance floating weeds away from the swim area. Dane County will apply the $3000 grant (SPL-226-10) to the costs of purchasing this floating boom system for Warner Beach.
Part of the county funding in 2012 will support development of a detailed written report of the various deflector projects on different beaches and under different current situations, and associated City of Madison water quality testing. The written report will include a discussion of project results and their applicability to other areas, and recommendations about the need for funding and program continuation. This report, including beach and boom photos, will be provided to DNR and all project partners, and posted on Dane County and partner websites.

Clean Lakes Alliance: Near Shore Water Quality Monitoring: Clean Lakes Alliance will run a program to increase near-shore water quality monitoring in the Madison Lakes in 2015 to help with beach closure timeliness, and improve ability of the public to make decisions about swimming. They will recruit, train and equip lifeguards or volunteers monitor a minimum of 6 and up to a maximum of 16 public beaches, with a focus on once per week E. coli sampling. In addition, up to 44 citizen volunteers will do weekly end-of-pier assessments of turbidity, temperature and blue green algae presence. Samples will be collected and delivered to the city-county health lab. Data will be analyzed and shared with researchers at UW Madison who are interested in modeling algae blooms within near-shore areas, and made available to the public on a mobile-ready website. Also, a community presentation will be given at the end of the season to discuss findings and recommendations, and a final report, including raw data, will be submitted to the department.
