Watershed - Gordon Creek (SP05)
Gordon Creek Watershed

Details

The Gordon Creek Watershed lies in southwestern Dane, northwestern Green and southeastern Iowa counties. The watershed is impacted by agricultural nonpoint source pollutions and ranks high in priority for nonpoint source pollution abatement. Three creeks in the watershed are on the state's list of impaired (303d) waters. However, the water quality in the watershed has improved as more land is set aside for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) and other forms of grassland management. Although the population of this rural watershed is not expected to grow significantly, development pressures and factory-style farming could threaten these improvements.

Ecological Landscapes for Gordon Creek Watershed

Ecological Landscapes

The Southwest Savanna Ecological Landscape is located in the far southwestern part of the state. It is characterized by deeply dissected topography, unglaciated for the last 2.4 million years, with broad open hilltops and river valleys, and steep wooded slopes. The climate is favorable for agriculture but the steep slopes limit it to the hilltops and valley bottoms. Soils are underlain with calcareous bedrock. Soils on hilltops are silty loams, sometimes of shallow depth over exposed bedrock and stony red clay subsoil. Some valley soils are alluvial sands, loams, and peats. Some hilltops are almost treeless due to the thin soil while others have a deep silt loam cap. Historic vegetation consisted of tall prairie grasses and forbs with oak savannas and some wooded slopes of oak. Almost three-quarters of the current vegetation is agricultural crops with lesser amounts of grasslands, barrens, and urban areas. The major forest types are oak-hickory and maple-basswood. High-quality prairie remnants occur on rocky hilltops and slopes that are not farmed. Some prairie pastures and oak savannas still exist. The grassland areas harbor many rare grassland birds, invertebrates, and other grassland species. Relict stands of pine occur on bedrock outcroppings along some stream systems.

Date  2010

Recreational Opportunities

The Gordon Creek watershed is encompassed by the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program's Grassland Project which looks to restore 10,000 acres of grassland in South Central Wisconsin. Additionally, The Nature Conservancy is actively involved in a grassland restoration project in the upper portion of the watershed. Each of these projects will likely improve habitat for grassland birds and have the additional benefit of increasing infiltration of rainfall and subsequently increase the baseflow of area streams.

Specific objectives & deliverables include: 1) installation of integrated stream bank stabilization, shaping back steep banks to reduce erosion; 2) utilizing & installing habitat techniques for native fish, non-game species, reptiles, amphibians, and plant communities; 3) the re-creation of overhead cover in the stream with structures that scour holes and add sinuosity to the stream; 4) assessment of the impact of the stream and floodplain improvement actions on water quality and wildlife; 5) regular communication about project implementation/progress through various venues; and 6) explore possibly of filming a documentary.

Otter Creek (1237100) TMDL
Date
Status
Otter Creek is impaired due to degraded habitat because of excessive sediment loading from surrounding agricultural lands to the Creek. Otter Creek is currently not meeting the applicable narrative water quality standard (WQS) that prohibits objectionable deposits on the shore or in the bed of a water in amounts that interfere with public rights in the water. To address the degraded habitat impairments, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) determined that sediment, specifically TSS, is the pollutant that must be addressed to attain designated uses and meet WQS.

Gordon Creek WatershedWatershed History Note

The Gordon Creek Watershed is home to the geologic wonder and tourist attraction known as Cave of the Mounds. The limestone from which the cave was carved began forming approximately 488 million years ago, during the Ordovician Period. During this time, much of North America was covered with warm, shallow seas where shellfish thrived. Over millions of years, the shells they left behind accumulated, forming enormous quantities of limestone. The type of limestone in which the cave was formed is called galena dolomite. The cave began forming about a million to a million and a half years ago in a manner similar to many caves. A large crack in the surface of the rock, called the cave's "lifeline", allowed rain water to seep into the stone. In the air, rain combines with carbon dioxide to form a weak carbonic acid. Though this acid is not very strong, it is strong enough to dissolve away the limestone after it seeps in through the lifeline. Over time, large cavities were dissolved in the stone and as the water table dropped, the water drained out and the cavities filled with air. Once the cavities are filled with air instead of water, the water droplets coming from the liifeline, which are saturated with dissolved calcium carbonate, deposit solid calcium carbonate, which builds up over time to create mineral formations called speleothems. This is a very gradual process, usually taking 50 to 150 years to form one cubic inch of material and continues to this day. On August 4, 1939, Cave of the Mounds was accidentally discovered when limestone quarry workers blasted a section of the quarry and exposed an opening to the cave. Work at the quarry then immediately stopped and was never continued. Soon after, the cave was closed to prevent damage from curious souvenir seekers who removed pieces of stalactites and stalagmites to take home. The cave was reopened in May 1940, after lights and wooden walkways had been installed. Since then, the wooden walkways have been replaced with concrete ones to accommodate the many visitors. Theatrical lighting has also been installed to further highlight the colors and shapes inside the cave. In 1988, the cave was designated a National Natural Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service.
